Speed to effectiveness

Easy to administer even with sensitivity to light, noise and pressure.

Map Metered Dose Inhaler

According to the National Headache Foundation (NHF), approximately 32 million people in the U.S. and 33 million people in Western Europe suffer from migraines, a chronic and debilitating neurological disorder. Most migraines last between four and 24 hours, but some can persist up to 3 days. Migraine patients report that currently approved drugs do not fully meet their needs due to slow onset of action and short duration of effect.

MAP approached Radius with a device concept that leveraged Metered dose inhaler technology to administer a form of dihydroergotamine (DHE) for the treatment of acute migraines faster and more effectively. The Tempo inhaler is a totally new delivery system for novel drug formulations. With a breath-actuated trigger and an internal drug-entrained air vortex, the Tempo delivers drug deeper and more repeat ably than other metered dose inhalers (MDIs).

Designed to be easy to administer even with sensitivity to light, noise and pressure and used anytime any where, design solutions were driven through user studies, industrial design exploration and iterative prototyping. By first exploring the condition and treatment options, the device in-use lifecycle was broken down for opportunity mapping. Informed by that deep insight, Radius developed a line of design options that included aesthetic, ergonomic and usability features sympathetic to the patient condition and validated through user studies and preference testing.

Through our design for manufacturability experience, we defined the optimum way to assemble the device for high-volume production.   Components were optimized for their respective manufacturing processes and the ideal materials were selected for the application.  Our quality planning efforts clarified the manufacturing process requirements for producing the components and assemblies needed to meet acceptance criteria.
